Santa Rosa Army Air Field opened in June 1942 as a Fourth Air Force training installation and satellite of Hamilton Field, where fighter pilots completed gunnery, bombing, and combat training before deployment overseas. The 478th Fighter Group was assigned to the field in December 1943 to train replacement pilots.

The field was inactivated in 1946 and later became what is today the Charles M. This is a locally published, independently produced regional history, not a mass-market trade title.
