The US 9th Army activated eight weeks before the June 1944 Normandy landings. The US 9th Army was one of the main US Army combat commands used during the campaign in Northwest Europe in 1944 and 1945. Landing in France over Utah Beach in September 1944 and ending May 1945. The 9th Army captured over 750,000 German prisoners of war, liberated almost 600,000 Allied prisoners of war and freed 1,250,000 displaced people.
