Original 1940s WWII era West Point Cadet cardigan sweater that belonged to Major General Rexford Herbert Dettre, Jr. Via USAF retired Colonel William Robert Stewart Jr. Both men grew up in California and graduated from West Point in January 1943.. They must have been good friends / roommates.. This sweater of Major General Dettre was acquired from Colonel Stewart's personal collection.
He was assigned to the 331st Fighter Squadron in California and then Washington and in April 1944 was transferred to the 428th Fighter Squadron, Van Nuys, Calif. And moved to England with that unit.
Soon after arriving in the European Theater of Operations, he was shot down over the Netherlands, evaded capture for three months, and then became a prisoner of war. Check more of Major General Dettre's distinguished military service and achievements online.
