For sale here is a very neat named US WW2 Army Air Forces Named Uniform Grouping with a Bancroft Flighter and 3 overseas caps. All pieces are named to W J Ott. The fellow that i got this from told me that he believed the first name was William.
I can't quite remember now, but i was told that Ott was from New Jersey or Delaware, and retired to either Delaware or New Jersey. The group includes a worsted wool Kahki summer Class A Uniform Jacket, a Khaki wool Bancroft Flighter, 1 tailor made Air Cadet khaki cotton overseas cap with Sterling insignia, 1 tailor made worsted wool Officer's overseas Cap with 2nd Lt.
Rank insignia, and 1 tailor made worsted wool overseas cap with no insignia. The jacket is in excellent condition with absolutely no mothing, rips, holes, or tears. The jacket does have a few tiny stains. The jacket features, a wool felt Army Air Forces HQ patch on the left shoulder, a matched pair of pin back snowflake backed 2nd Lieutenant rank devices, clutch back Officer's collar devices with mixed flat back clutches, and there are pin holes evident from a wing removal. The jacket is named to WJ Ott in the lining with the tailor's label of Schwartz of Cincinnati and again inside the pocket where it is also dated 7/44.
The jacket shows only very light wear. There is no size mark, but i guess that it's a size 38. The khaki Flighter shows plenty of wear and has a great 50 Mission look. The body of the cap is made of khaki or suntan worsted wool. The bill is the standard single ply brown leather.
The cap shows a few piques or nips to the body and some staining. However, this still looks great for display. The Bancroft features a screw back unmarked eagle. The mohair band is in great condition with none of the stains of the body. The leather chin cord and bill are supple, but the bill is slightly misshapen from storage, but there is no unsightly edge cracking. Inside, the cap has a darkened sweat shield and bold crisp Bancroft Flighter logo.
The bottom side of the bill is double stamped to WJ Ott. The leather sweatband is fully stitched and is nice and supple. There is no size marking, but it fits like a size 7. The khaki cadet overseas cap is tailor made with a leather sweatband and no lining. This is also named to Ott.
This cap has a Sterling pin back cadet pin, and though it isn't size marked, it fits like a size 7. The overseas cap with rank has toned gold bullion officer's piping, a pin back snowflake back 2nd Lt. Rank pin, leather sweatband, gold satin lining, is made of worsted wool, is marked size 7 1/8, and has one nip to the right front. The overseas cap without the rank pin is made of worsted wool, looks unworn, is tailor made, is marked 7 1/8, and is extremely nice. This is a great little grouping with great hats.
No research has been done by me. I do have additional pictures of the Flighter if you need them. The measurements of the jacket are below for your convenience. Armpit to Armpit: 18.5. Top to Bottom W/ Collar: 34.
