This is a very scarce, very special Hamilton 4992B, 22 jewel, 16s WWII issue Master Navigator watch #4C2620. The movement is marked "US ARMY AIR CORPS". Movements marked this way are extremely rare and highly sought after.
The watch is completely original with the exception of the crystal. These watches were issued with plastic crystals, this one is glass. The case back is engraved. This engraving is correct for the watch as the Army Air Corps became the Army Air Force in late June of 1941. 4992Bs issued after that have serial numbers starting with AF instead of AC like this one has.
The case back and watch ring serial numbers match (see photos). This is unusual due to Quartermaster Corps watch makers mixing up the case backs when they were done servicing them.
The case back screws on easily and the engraving lines up perfectly. The watch is in very good condition overall. The dial is near perfect, the hands are very good, no chips or discoloration.
The case shows it's age. There is brassing and scratches on the case back. The bezel and ring show some pitting between 14:00 and 10:00 on the bottom of the watch. The watch was recently serviced by a very well respected watch maker that specializes in these watches. The watch keeps excellent time. The hack function works and the watch winds and sets exactly as built to do. The inside of the case back is crudely engraved with the name "TONY HARLOW".
I believe this to be the original owner. 90th Bomb Group, 320th Bomb Squadron. Decorated with the DFC, Air Medal, and Oak Leaf Cluster.
Served in the Southwest Pacific. This was a B-24 Liberator heavy-bomber group operating in the. Flying long-range missions over New Guinea, the Bismarck Archipelago, the Philippines, and the Dutch East Indies. Air Medal - 1 Oak Leaf Cluster. These awards confirm he flew multiple combat missions and performed with distinction. This an excellent example of true WWII history and the watch belonged to a decorated officer. Tony went on to practice law in New York after the war. It is listed for a high price due to it's rarity and the investment I have made in it to restore it to it's former glory and ensure that it runs well going forward.
That said, feel free to make me an offer.
